Working and treatment of Acyclovir – Zovirax

Zovirax cream is produced for the treatment of cold sore as soon as they are formed (when they are in tingle stage);it helps in disinfecting them and in some cases it also prevents from herpes; the cream should be applied externally ONLY to the infected areas like face and lips, for best results use 5 times a day for 4 days. The virus sensitivity tests are not standardized, so one has to keep a quantitative relationship between the antiviral to in vitro weakness of herpes virus and clinical response to the therapy.

This can be done with the help of specialized physician. Zovirax is available in tablets of 400mg and 800mg and capsule of 200mg capsule plus an ointment of 5% (15gm) for controlling the outbreak of herpes. Usual dosage is to take 800mg five times in a day, depending on how severe the infection is; patient can also apply ointment in infected areas from five to six times a day. For best result patient should tell the doctor about the medicine he/she is taking prior to Acyclovir and also that if you are a regular drinker or smoker and even if you are taking any illegal drugs. In rare cases this medicine can adversely effects the kidneys so patient should continuously visit the doctor to monitor it.

You should start taking Acyclovir in early stages of the infection of herpes or chicken pox, Zovirax works best at that time, it reduces itching, pain and sores. It doesn’t mean that if you are taking doses of this drug, the other person might not get herpes or chicken pox. Acyclovir only reduces the symptoms on the patient but can still pass the infection to others.
